Coach Bios


Tamalyn Tanis  (17 Open) was a standout volleyball player at Cave Spring HS and then was a four-year starting outside hitter at the University of Mary Washington.  She coached JV at Cave Spring HS for eight years before taking over as the Head Varsity Coach at Cave Spring eight seasons ago.  Since then, Tamalyn has lead Cave Spring to the State Final Four in six of her eight seasons, including five consecutive appearances in the State Finals, winning four state championships.  She has also coached Roanoke Juniors for the past ten seasons and serves as the Club Director for Roanoke Juniors and the Tournament Director for the Shamrock Festival.  Tamalyn is one of the very few area coaches with CAP Level 2 coaching certification.

Mark Tanis· (17 Open) has been an assistant coach at Cave Spring HS for the past 10 years and has also assisted with various Roanoke Juniors teams during that time.  Mark is also the Treasurer for Roanoke Juniors and the Tournament Director of the Shamrock Festival.  Mark played 5 years of adult league volleyball at RVC in Richmond before moving back to Roanoke to marry Tamalyn in 1999.

Heather Donaho·(17 Club) played volleyball at North Cross and was a setter for the team that won a state championship in 1994.· She then went to Roanoke College where she was a four-year starting setter from 1995-1999.· After graduating from Roanoke College in 1999, Heather began coaching JV volleyball at North Cross.· She is now in her third year as the varsity coach at North Cross and her team won the State Championship in 2009.· Heather coached the Roanoke Juniors 16 Club team last season.

James Eaton·(17 Club) started playing volleyball in a class during his senior year at VCU and he has been playing ever since.· In all, he has been playing in the RVVA,·USAV, and in summer doubles tournaments for about 20 years now.· On the coaching side, James was an assistant coach at Roanoke College for 7 years and also helped coach at Northside High School for 2 years.· He has been coaching club volleyball teams in various age groups for 10+ years.· James has also been a referee for· USAV juniors and adult volleyball.· He has officiated in the ODAC and often calls lines at Virginia Tech home matches as well.

Bernie Walsh·(16 Club) has played volleyball for 23 years, playing in 2 Co-Ed National Championships and 2 U.S. Zonal Championships, and the 1997 Haili Mens' Club Tournament in Hilo, Hawaii. Bernie was on teams that won 5 Regional Championships and appeared in 3 other Regional finals and he personally was selected to 4 All-Region Teams. Bernie has coached women’s and men’s adult USAV teams, including 2 Regional Champions and 1 Regional Semifinalist. He has also coached boys' and girls' Junior Olympic Teams, including elite JO's teams which played in USAV National Qualifying and AAU National Championship tournaments.

Maria Rushbrooke·(15 Open) is currently the Head Varsity Coach at Roanoke Catholic School and her team played in the state tournament this season for the first time in many years.· Maria began playing volleyball in 1992 and has been playing in doubles tournaments/leagues as well as on USAV women’s and co-ed teams ever since.· She has coached with Roanoke Juniors since 2006.

Deirdre Stevens·(15 Open) was a standout player at Lord Botetourt High School and then played 3 years of club volleyball at Virginia Tech after declining an invitation to walk-on at VT.· Deirdre has been playing in outdoor doubles tournaments for many years and partnered with Tamalyn Tanis on a few tournament titles “back in the day.”· Deirdre has been coaching club volleyball for the past 3 seasons.

Deon Matthews·(15 Club) has been playing club volleyball since 1991. He played beach doubles during his time in the Marine Corp from 1991-1997 and was a setter for the regional Marine Volleyball team in 1994 & 1995. More recently, Deon has played on various USAV teams and presently plays at RVVA. He was the head coach at Cave Spring Middle School in 2009.

Jenna Burnop·(16 Club) was an excellent middle hitter at Blacksburg High School and Roanoke College.· She has coached at William Byrd HS and Cave Spring HS the past two seasons.

Jody Harden·(14 Club) played college volleyball at Roanoke College and Ferrum College.· She has coached JV volleyball at Roanoke Catholic and Salem High School the past two years and has also coached Roanoke Juniors 13’s and 14’s teams the past 2 seasons.

Randy Asbury·(14 Club) has been an assistant coach at Roanoke College for the past six seasons.· He has also been an assistant coach at William Byrd High School, including the Terriers state championship team in 2000.· Randy has also coached various Roanoke Juniors teams over the past 10 years, including a team that qualified for nationals.· With 30 years of coaching and playing experience under his belt, Randy brings a great deal of knowledge to all the teams he coaches.

Erika Hoffman·(13 Club) has been playing volleyball for 17 years.· A graduate of Cave Spring High School and then JMU, she has enjoyed playing recreation ball through the Roanoke Valley Volleyball Association (RVVA) as well as doubles tournaments in the summer. She has been coaching with Roanoke Juniors for the past 2 seasons and also coaches at Roanoke Catholic.

Whitney Crawford·(15 Club) has been an active volleyball player for twelve years, including her time at Glenvar High School and Longwood University where she enjoyed developing her volleyball skills.· She coached two years at the high school level in Farmville and has been coaching middle school at the Roanoke Catholic for the past two years as well.· Whitney is also a member of RVVA and she loves playing in the summer doubles tournaments.

Nicki Sarver·(Instructional League) played volleyball at William Byrd and then played 4 years of college volleyball as well - one year at Roanoke College and three years at Hollins University.· She has also been playing volleyball at RVVA since 1995.· She has been coaching for more than ten years and has served as the Head JV Coach and Assistant Varsity Coach at William Byrd HS, Head Coach at Roanoke Catholic, and Assistant Varsity Coach at Northside HS.· Nicki is currently the Head Coach at William Byrd MS.

Gene Thompson·(Instructional League) is currently the Assistant Coach at William Byrd MS.· Gene has also been playing volleyball at RVVA for the past two seasons.
